Jehoash King of Israel

Jehoash son of Jehoahaz succeeded his father, and he did evil just like his father. He is remembered for his battle with Amaziah king of Judah.

Amaziah king of Judah won victories in Edom in a cruel fashion. He sought their gods, and in misplaced confidence, challenged Jehoash king of Israel. “And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents” (2 Kings 14:12). The king of Israel broke down the walls of Jerusalem and took from the treasury there.

This victory was not for Jehoash’s sake. Amaziah’s fall was a result of his proudful turning from the Lord: “But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom” (2 Chronicles 25:20). Consider how the Israeli army was diminished in his father’s day, and they still had victory over Judah. “The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD” (Proverbs 21:31).

Just because Jehoash had success on the battlefield does not mean that Jehoash was more righteous or virtuous than his Judean counterpart. Likewise, alleged success or physical blessing in anyone’s life does not correspond to how righteous or favored of the Lord he is.
