Liberty Which We Have in Christ Jesus (Galatians 2:4)

And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: (Galatians 2:4)

What liberty do we have in Christ? In this context, it is dealing with freedom from the Law, its demands, and its condemnation. The Law, which is God’s Word and is good, condemns us. We do not measure up, ever. Christ came to redeem us from under the Law.

It is not just the Law of God. We are also saved from the principle of law. “For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves” (Romans 2:14). Any amount of performance that is sought to find favor with God also condemned us. This is what we refer to as legalism or being legalistic about certain practices, including otherwise good practices. However, Jesus Christ saved us, and we are in Him. We realize who we are in Christ so that He will perform His perfect will through us.
