A Child Is Born: Counsellor (Isaiah 9:6)

According to Isaiah 9:6, the Lord Jesus Christ is also our “Counsellor.” Counsellors were ones the kings went to receive sound advice for important decisions. For them, it did not work out so well all the time. David had Ahithophel, who turned out to be a traitor for his son Absalom’s rebellion. Absalom asked of Ahithophel how to capture his father. Rehoboam had the young men counsellors who gave advice to make the yoke of his people heavier, thus severing the kingdom into two parts.
Not so with the Lord. In our case, the counsellor is also the King. His guidance is pure and righteous, and infinitely more valuable than the men mentioned before. How does He do this? By His Holy Spirit. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” (John 14:26). In hard times, He gives us of His Word: “But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost” (Mark 13:11).
