A Child Is Born: The Mighty God (Isaiah 9:6)

The third name for the Lord Jesus Christ in Isaiah 9:6 is “The mighty God.” A potential error in the Christmas holiday is seeing the baby Jesus and forgetting that He is the mighty God. He was from eternity past, “whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2). He became a human being, being born of a virgin, and was that baby in swaddling clothes.
But He did not stay a baby. He grew up and poured Himself out to death. Many forget that He will appear a second time, and He will not be a baby then. “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation” (Hebrews 9:28). He will return as the enthroned King to save His people from the coming wrath and take vengeance on His enemies. This is what we read of the mighty God in the next chapter: “The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God” (Isaiah 10:21).
