A Child Is Born: Wonderful (Isaiah 9:6)

Many consider Isaiah 9:6 during the Christmas season and how it pertains to the coming of our Lord. Let us consider the names ascribed to the Lord Jesus Christ in this verse.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
Recall that a “name” refers to more than something somebody calls Him. A name also includes His power and authority. The first name ascribed to the Lord is “Wonderful.” “Wonders” and “marvellous things” are things ascribed to God elsewhere: “Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?” (Exodus 15:11). These “wonders” use the same word as “Wonderful.” These are miracles that only God can do.
Jesus’ earthly ministry was filled with miracles. “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people” (Matthew 9:35). His greatest miracle was His death, burial, and resurrection: “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father” (John 10:17-18).
This is how He delivered us from our sin. He truly is wonderful.
