Who Is Holding You Up?

Which is better to say, that one lost their salvation or that they never were saved to begin with? Part of this might be semantics. The result seems to be the same at first glance. However, it is better to say that one was never saved to begin with because God does not destroy your “eternal” life and yank back His Holy Spirit at the first sign of your failure. Because you will fail. Your faith will fail. What happens if you don’t believe for a while? “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself” (2 Timothy 2:13).

The difference between the two sayings will show your view of God and nature of salvation. The truly saved will always be brought back to God because of the Christian’s regeneration and rebirth into a new creature. “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God” (1 John 3:9).

Christ was tortured and died knowing full well your impotence. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). The best question to ask yourself is “was I ever saved to begin with?” Am I born again? Do I save myself, or did Christ save me? Otherwise, you will always be left wondering when God will take it all away and leave you standing by the side of the road. The view promotes skepticism toward God, unbelief, and performing to maintain your probationary salvation. You’re waiting for Him to pull the plug. I never would have said I believed that, but subconsciously, I have before.

What makes you think you are one of the few that has entered the strait gate and is walking the narrow way?

Now the doctrine of eternal security is a dangerous doctrine when taught incorrectly because we feed it to everyone who made some confession in the past without considering their present. Of course, God views from eternity, knowing the beginning from the ending. He knows who will be with Him in His kingdom and who won’t be. But we don’t know these things. Of course, there is assurance of salvation from the Scriptures, but we could be kidding ourselves. A tree is known for its fruit, but in other cases, we know the wheat looks just like the tare. Everyone who names the name of Christ needs to take a look at themselves. “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?” (2 Corinthians 13:5).

For this cause, we must throw ourselves on Christ as there cannot be any cause for self-confidence. For self-confidence is death.

Eternal life is contingent on being born again and the regeneration by the Holy Spirit, not your minute-by-minute performance. “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14). “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever” (1 Peter 1:23). “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5).

Who is holding you up from falling into eternal darkness? We shall live because He lives.
