The Renewing of the Holy Spirit

2022-02-01

The Word of God is instrumental in generating faith in a person. However, the Holy Spirit, as we have seen, always works in tandem with the Word. Consider the following:

But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost (Titus 3:4-5)

The Spirit has a role in regenerating and renewing us. Though the outward man may look very much the same, the inward man is a completely new creature. We did not elicit this from Him; the Spirit Himself makes anew.

The “regeneration” is the same as the regeneration Jesus speaks of when He said, “Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel” (Matthew 19:28). This clearly references His reign on earth. We have been regenerated, a foretaste of that regeneration to come.

He renews and regenerates us, and He abides with us forever:

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever (John 14:16)
