Should Not Abide in Darkness (John 12:46)

I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. (John 12:46)

Here, we see that when we believe in Him, we “should not abide in darkness.” Recall also, “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth” (1 John 1:6). To walk in darkness, we must not have faith in Him at that moment. We started looking to the boisterous waves of circumstances, or some other insidious distraction came, and we obeyed that instead. But as we continue to believe in Him, we remain in and walk in His light.

You see how important it is to not just believe unto salvation, but also to believe to walk in the Christ life. We receive of His from the Spirit in a daily walk of faith with Him.

Recall also that the Lord said, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life (John 8:12). He is “the light of the world” to save us from that darkness. And we cannot have both light and darkness at the same time. “And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:4). Faith is the difference between light and darkness. What do we believe but this, that we have received life from the dead, and therefore have His life in us? It is His life in us that will keep us in the light.
