I AM Statement #2: I Am the Light of the World (John 8:12)

Light dispels darkness. We turn on lights to see where we are going and not stumble. Light also exposes what is lurking in the darkness. It shows us what hides in darkness to cause harm. It also exposes evil, showing it for what it is. This is what Jesus does as well:

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. (John 8:12)

The Pharisees had brought Jesus a woman caught in adultery. Her sin was exposed for all to see, but so were the religious leaders’ sins that day: “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” And to the woman, He said, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”

As light exposes sin, Jesus exposes our sin. But He also lights the way on how to be saved and how to serve Him.
