Call the Sabbath a Delight (Isaiah 58:13-14)

2025-05-29

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. (Isaiah 58:13-14)

The Sabbath is not a day of the week. It is a Person, for Jesus Christ is Lord of the Sabbath. It is entering into His rest. It is when we rest from our own works. If we think in these terms, this passage comes to life.

Where was Jesus before the first day of the week? He was in the heart of the earth. He was crucified and He rested before He began a new life and creation on the first day of the week.

We also, when we enter into His Sabbath rest, have ceased from our own pleasure, our own ways, and our own words. Buried with Him is a pleasure because all that was tied up in this sorrowful life of sin came to an end. Here, we learn a new source of life that comes from the Lord, a life that is eternal.

This is a promise from the Lord Himself. Our death with Him brings the pleasure of walking in new life.
