Our Old Man Is Crucified with Him (Romans 6:6)

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. (Romans 6:6)

We died with Christ. It is a historical fact. The events of His crucifixion and my crucifixion were concurrent. How can this be? Well, the Word of God says so. We were in Him when the crucifixion happened. This is something we discussed before.

It may not feel like it is true. A lot of things do not “feel” true, but do my feelings make them less true? Jesus Christ died; this is a historical fact that we had to believe to be saved. Now we must believe that we died with Him to be delivered from sin in our experience. “For he that is dead is freed from sin” (Romans 6:7).

Thus, one of my favorite quotes outside the Bible is from Watchman Nee: “The self you loathe is on the cross in Christ.”

This concept here is one of the most important facts of the Christian life and sanctification, yet it is undertaught, underrecognized, and unknown. It can seem elusive as you try to believe and embrace this fact of our death with Christ, but we must believe it and pursue it or else we endlessly struggle in an unwinnable battle against sin.
