The Purpose of Life

2018-09-20

The purpose of human life can be summarized by this verse:

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. (Revelation 4:11)

Since God is the Creator of everything, including you and me, He alone can specify our purpose. He created us because He wanted to, and that we would please Him.

This God-given task of pleasing the Creator is sobering because we do not live every second of life to please Him. We are sinners.

However, God delivered us from the penalty of sin by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die in our stead. He gives us new life if we believe that Jesus died for us and rose again.

As believers, we now have an even more narrowed focus:

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)

God created us anew in Christ, giving us specific works for us to do. Seek the Lord. What is He asking you to do?

The broad answer is to live a holy life separated from the world, love others, share the Gospel, and to become more like Christ. However, He has gifted us uniquely to fulfill these commandments. What do you have that you can use to honor God in this life?
