The Promise of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:33)

2024-04-01

Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. (Acts 2:33)

We received the Holy Spirit by grace just as much as we received the forgiveness of sins by grace. Because the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ was shed, we received the forgiveness of sins. Likewise, because He was exalted on high and is enthroned at the Father’s right hand, we received the Holy Spirit.

We have had Him since our rebirth, and He continues with us still. Because our Lord was given the Spirit from the Father, He could give Him to us. He is “shed forth,” meaning the same as to “pour out” (Acts 2:17), and the same as Jesus’ blood being shed in Mark 14:24.

Our having the Spirit is contingent only on the Lord Jesus Christ being exalted in heaven, which happened long before we existed.
