Othniel the Son of Kenaz

Othniel was the first judge of Israel listed in the book of Judges. He was Caleb’s son-in-law and had just as much toughness as Caleb. Caleb promised his daughter to whomever would destroy Kirjathsepher, and Othniel did it. Strangely enough, Othniel was the son of Caleb’s younger brother, Kenaz. Toughness was a part of this family.

Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia put Israel to tribute for eight years. The Spirit of the LORD came upon Othniel. He became a judge and went out to war and defeated the Mesopotamians.

One thing to learn from Othniel was that He was both filled with the Spirit and mentally tough. He did not have any fear of anything. Because of these traits, the Lord used Him in a mighty way. If every Christian were like this man, the church of God would be far more effective for the Kingdom as it is today!

And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim. (Judges 3:10)
