Only One

There are pantheistic religions that believe in a multitude of gods, and the Mormon religion believes there are other gods associated with other planets. But the LORD is the true God who has neither beginning nor ending, and He created all things. “All things” means everything else that is not Himself; there is no exception.

Last month, we saw that the LORD is God, and “there is none else.” This phrase appeared many times throughout the Bible, especially in Isaiah. There is a pair of verses that expresses this another way.

Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. (Isaiah 43:10-11)

The I am he means He always was and always will be. The word represented by “LORD” even means “He is.” Furthermore, “before me” is a non sequitur because the true God is the creator of everything, including time, and all things are dependent on Him. God uses the phrase anyway to communicate that there is no other God, and no one who created Him. We would not expect anyone to come along and supersede God; He exists outside of time.

He also is the only Savior. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). You cannot look for someone else to be the Savior, though the world is looking for somebody else to save them. You will look in vain, and the end is misery.
