They Shall Look Upon Me Whom They Have Pierced (Zechariah 12:10)

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water... And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. (John 19:34, 37)
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. (Zechariah 12:10)

The apostle John saw the Lord being pierced on the cross and quoted Zechariah to show Scripture fulfillment. First, do not overlook the change of pronoun: “They shall look on him whom they pierced” versus “they shall look upon me whom they have pierced.” The LORD God was pierced on Calvary.

This piercing showed that the Lord was dead, which is why His legs were not broken. Elsewhere, “pierced” is translated “thrust through.” He was stabbed all the way through.

Many mourned for the Lord when He died, not understanding that He would rise again on the third day. “But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done” (Luke 24:21).

The fulfillment of the Scripture is only in part at Calvary. “Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen” (Revelation 1:7). Those that loved Him mourned when He was pierced. When that pierced one returns, everyone else will mourn.
