Love Is Strong as Death (Song of Solomon 8:6-7)

Do you want to understand love?
With love comes jealousy, but perhaps not in the way you might think. The one loved is protected by the lover in every way. Anything that threatens the one loved is in grave danger. We are told, “the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” (Exodus 34:14). Consider the Scriptures:
Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned. (Song of Solomon 8:6-7)
So when you read “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” you can understand what love is. God’s love for you “is strong as death.” The Son of God left the glory of heaven and pursued His love to the darkest hell. He did not want His love to belong to another; He wanted life for her, and not death, the best, and not the worst. He died for whom He loved.
Jesus’ fiery love cannot be quenched by whelming floods. It cannot be purchased with all one’s goods. These things cheapen love. The one loved can only receive love from the lover.
You are His love. You cannot bribe Him to receive it. You are just loved.
