THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS (Jeremiah 23:6)

Jeremiah preached a lot of hard things to the people of Judah. This included the overthrowing of Judah and Jerusalem. He even said that King Coniah, or Jehoiachin, would be taken away captive and would have no son that would sit on the throne. “Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah” (Jeremiah 22:30). Was this a breach in the Davidic covenant? Would there be no more king in Judah? God always keeps His promises. This is how He would preserve His promise to David:

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. (Jeremiah 23:5-6)

This Branch would be descended from David. He would reign in judgment and justice and would save His people. How would He save them? He would give them His righteousness, as He is named, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. He is the Lord Jesus Christ.

But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe (Romans 3:21-22)
