Behold the Handmaid of the Lord (Luke 1:37-38)

For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. (Luke 1:37-38)

The God of the impossible was going to do something new. There was never a case of a virgin giving birth before, but Mary believed every word of Gabriel’s proclamation. Mary’s response contrasts with Zacharias’ response, whose miracle of a son in his old age was far less astonishing:

And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. (Luke 1:18)

A major problem we have is unbelief. We do not believe that the Lord can do the mundane let alone the reasonable and the possible.

Trust Christ for salvation, for “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). In addition, if He can make a virgin conceive and give the sinner His righteousness, trust Him with your day-to-day life.

Whatever the Lord has for you, it is not, “Whereby shall I know this?” but “Behold the handmaid of the Lord.”
