The Great Commission

2022-12-22

What is the Great Commission? It is the decree from the Lord to share all that He said and did with the world, so that people would be saved. This commissioning exists in all four Gospels and Acts. It was the last commandment of the Lord before He left for heaven.

When Jesus rose from the dead, all authority was given to Him of the Father. Because of this, we can be confident He will be with us to the end and strengthen us. When He ascended to heaven and was enthroned, He sent His Spirit to enable us to share the good news. As the Father sent Christ, Christ sends us into the world; we are to be like Him in this way. We are sent to teach everything He taught, but especially His vicarious death, burial, and resurrection, by which we are saved. Those who believe will also be saved and have remission of sins.

This is why Christians are in the world today; it is our primary focus and act of worship, for every person saved is another person who will praise the Lord for eternity.

These are the requisite passages: Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:46-49; John 20:21; Acts 1:8.

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20)
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Mark 16:15-16)
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. (Luke 24:46-49)
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. (John 20:21)
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)
