He Went Throughout Every City and Village

And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance. (Luke 8:1-3)
Jesus our Lord went to every city and village. He made sure that everyone heard of the good news of the coming kingdom. This is the compassion He had for His people, that nobody would be left out.
We also see that He had a significant following with Him. We see here that the Twelve were with Him, whom He selected to be His disciples and apostles. With them were Mary Magdalene, who would become a key witness to His resurrection, and two others, Joanna, and Susanna. This Joanna was the wife of a high-profile official of Herod’s. These supported him financially.
Did the Lord need any of these people with them? The Lord does not need anything. If He can feed a multitude with a few morsels, He does not need them, just like He does not need us either.
So why were they all there? Two things. He was teaching them how to preach the Gospel and minister to others. He was also showing them that He uses ordinary people to do His work.
Joanna may have been an example of a prominent person, but who were the rest of these? The Lord uses ordinary people above all to show that any notable thing they do must be from Him.
