Saying #7: Father, Into Thy Hands I Commend My Spirit (Luke 23:46)

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. (Luke 23:46)
Our Lord said this with “It is finished” according to John 19:30. Now that Jesus had accomplished the debt payment for humankind, He presented Himself to the Father. This is a reference to Psalm 31:5: “Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth” (Psalm 31:5). This stands in contrast to Psalm 22:1: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Throughout His Passion, His trust in the Father never ceased.
Jesus presented Himself before the Father, and He was accepted: “He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied” (Isaiah 53:11) and “Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great” (Isaiah 53:12). Because Jesus was accepted, we are as well: “by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities” (Isaiah 53:11) and “he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:12).
