Charity, Part XI: I Put Away Childish Things (1 Corinthians 13:11)

2023-01-07

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. (1 Corinthians 13:11)

In another example of how temporary some gifts were, this age and the regeneration are compared with childhood and adulthood. Children are learning and growing. They are with their parents and in school learning about the fundamentals of life. When grown, their responsibilities change. They graduate from school, enter the workforce, marry, and have families of their own. Part of being “perfected” is being mature. When mature, you do not need to learn the fundamentals anymore. They do not need parents like the small child does. Likewise, in this age, we do not know everything about what is to come, but we learn through preaching of the word, not ever being complete until the Day of Christ. Christian charity, on the other hand, exists forever, from the new birth to glorification.
