And Cain Knew His Wife

2017-01-01

And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. (Genesis 4:17)

Where did Cain get his wife? If all people came from Adam and Eve, and Cain was the son of these two, where did he get his wife?

And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: (Genesis 5:4)

Adam and Eve had at least two daughters, because Genesis 5:4 says that he “begat... daughters.” Cain would have married one of those daughters.

When people hear this as the answer, and it is the only answer there is, they are disgusted because of the thought of incest. One woman I told this to years ago said that that is the reason she believes in evolution. Another once responded, “That’s just gross!”

Think about this one for a moment: If we evolved from animals over millions of years, then there would have been thousands of times where incest would have happened in our ancestry. Animals do it all the time! They do not care! If you think that is gross or weird, it is much more gross and weird if we descended from animals.

There could not have been another way for Cain to get his wife. God did not create any other person that did not descend from Adam, for God “hath made of one blood all nations” (Acts 17:26). And again, “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20). All humans came from Adam and Eve. If all human beings have a common ancestor, then any son or daughter of Adam would have married a sibling.
