They Themselves Are Beasts (Ecclesiastes 3:18)

I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts. (Ecclesiastes 3:18)
While observing the world “under the sun” and contemplating the endless cycles of life in the world, the preacher makes this observation. What is the difference between humankind and beast? They all seem to die and fade away. Even modern science will tell us that human beings are just animals. If left to ourselves, that is the conclusion we come to.
However, as we read scriptures, we do know something about life beyond the sun. We know there is a difference between humankind and beasts. Even the preacher concludes: “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14).
Since we have become so content looking only to this life for comfort and consolation, it is no wonder so many people act like beasts.
