Angel of Light (2 Corinthians 11:14)

What do you think of when you think of the devil? Maybe an ugly man that is a ridiculous shade of red, with horns, tail, and pitchfork. This is not Biblical, though it is true that he is portrayed as a powerful dragon throughout the Scriptures. Yesterday, we saw that he is a cherub, which suggests another aspect of his appearance. However, he commends himself to the world this way:

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14)

He makes himself look appealing. And his best servants do the same:

Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. (2 Corinthians 11:15)

The most sophisticated evil does not come looking evil. The most convincing evil does not come with horns and pitchfork; it comes well-dressed and friendly. It aggressively markets health, wealth, and wisdom of this world. It tells of righteousness and goodness apart from the cross of Christ. It tells partial truths. It preaches “another Jesus” (2 Corinthians 11:4). In the end times, it will be commonplace:

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. (Matthew 24:24)

Knowing the Lord, the Scriptures and this common trap of the devil will lead us in such times.
