Abigail

Nobody knows why Abigail, “a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance” was married to a man who “was churlish and evil in his doings,” “a son of Belial,” and one where “folly is with him.” Whatever it may be, Abigail had to appease the wrath of David kindled by the harsh words of Nabal. The most important things Abigail said concerned the future of David.

  1. The Lord would make David a house, or a household. This is foreshadowing of the Davidic Covenant, where God promised David a dynasty of kings that would come from him. Whenever you see this, you should ultimately think of Jesus Christ, the one who would sit on David’s throne forever. (1 Samuel 25:28)
  2. David fought the Lord’s battles. David followed the Lord, and his adversary Saul did not. (1 Samuel 25:28)
  3. David had an impeccable character. “...evil hath not been found in thee all thy days” (1 Samuel 25:28)
  4. David’s soul is bound to the Lord. How much closer to the Lord can you get? (1 Samuel 25:29)
  5. David’s enemies shall be defeated. Do not miss the metaphor of the sling, which a skill of David’s, having taken out Goliath. (1 Samuel 25:29)
  6. David would be ruler. He certainly became king in the place of Saul. (1 Samuel 25:30)

David’s life is often seen as a pattern of Jesus Christ. You can see how these apply to our Lord, fulfilling the Davidic dynasty, the One who will fight against His enemies when He returns, the One who was sinless, and the One who is very close to the LORD, being His own Son. And do not miss the pattern, that the bride of David was formerly married to a devil.

And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord. (1 Samuel 25:41)

You and I, as a part of the church, were in the same predicament of Abigail. We once were bound to Belial; now we are bound to Christ.
