Things Too High for Me (Psalm 131:1)

A Song of degrees of David. LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. (Psalm 131:1)

Consider the king of Israel, one who was promised a never-ending dynasty after him, having a humble attitude. David came from a humble background of shepherding and being the youngest in his family, this humility carried over into his kingship. He knew that even as king, he needed the Lord’s strength.

Moreover, the ways of the Almighty are beyond us; we will never have God all figured out. “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it” (Psalm 139:6).

Knowing what is beyond your ability is important, for we are very finite and feeble. Knowing our infinite weakness, we are brought to trust in the Lord: “Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child. Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever” (Psalm 131:2-3).
