The LORD Is On My Side (Psalm 118:6)

The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? (Psalm 118:6)

How can the psalmist say with surety, “The LORD is on my side”? Well, he just stated in his refrain, “his mercy endureth for ever” four times. Surely God is merciful, but this word “mercy” is even stronger than what we normally think. It is חֶסֶד, “chesed,” that word for “lovingkindness,” or that loyal covenantal love that God has towards His people. He never breaks His covenant. For us, such a word is even stronger since the blood of Christ sealed the New Covenant with His people. We can say of a truth that “the LORD is on my side”: “If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

Therefore, it is utterly irrational to be afraid of other men. They can only do so much to you as God will allow. “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). Rather, we can walk confidently in our God, the Lord Jesus Christ, knowing that He has defeated every principality and power that would stand up against Him. Therefore, I comfort myself in this today.
