The Iron Did Swim (2 Kings 6:6)

The sons of the prophets were expanding where they dwelt because the area was too small. One had borrowed an axe from someone to help with building, but the axe head fell off into the Jordan. “But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed” (2 Kings 6:5).

This was a big deal for possibly a few reasons. For one, they would have to replace it for the owner. “And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good” (Exodus 22:14). Surely, if they had an axe to replace it, they would not have had to borrow. Also, they could have borrowed it from someone outside their group, which would cause damage to their testimony.

However, the Lord can reverse the laws of nature since He created them. “And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim. Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it” (2 Kings 6:6-7).

More important, He could take us and change us from enemies into His children. “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). God can reverse any negative thing and turn it around for His glory.
