The Secret Cost of the Christian Life

We often think about salvation being a free gift, and that is true. We are told, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). However, in many ways there is a secret cost involved. Things change when we’re born again. “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). Perhaps it is not so much a cost, but suddenly, a lot of things do not seem as important as they used to. The 24 elders threw down their crowns at His throne. The disciples left their nets. Paul left his Pharisee position. You are never the same. And when you try to embrace those things which you left behind, be it sin or some other baggage, you are disappointed. All of it is a lesson to teach us that Christ matters everything, and everything else must be seen in His light. This is the secret cost of the Christian life.
