A Scourge of Small Cords
2018-12-22
Jesus was not one for sudden outbursts; He carefully made a scourge of small cords to drive out the merchants from the Temple. He did this at least twice during His earthly ministry (Matthew 21:12-17; Mark 11:15-19; Luke 19:45-48; John 2:13-17). People were using God’s house as a place for financial gain, and this caused the Lord to act.
Now, we have a new Temple. The church is the place here on earth where the Lord’s Temple is now, and we as individuals are also members of the Lord’s Temple. How much more will the Lord say, “The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up” (John 2:17)?
Appreciate when the Lord comes with His scourge to drive out the things that defile His Temple. It is necessary that the Lord should purify His Temple that He might take us to higher, holy ground. He is making us a house that “shall be called of all nations the house of prayer” (Mark 11:17). He must eradicate all that is not of Him.
