The Saving of the Soul (Hebrews 10:39)

But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. (Hebrews 10:39)
The phrase “saving of the soul” is of interest here. What does the word “saving” here mean?
- The soul is a purchased possession: “Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory” (Ephesians 1:14). God purchased every saved person with the blood of His son; we are His purchased possessions.
- The soul is obtained: “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:9). Again, “Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 2:14). God obtained His people by His Son.
- The soul is made peculiar: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (1 Peter 2:9). God set His people apart from the rest of the world through His Son for His purpose.
The soul of every Christian is purchased by God and belongs to Him. We were set apart for His own purposes. Once a soul is purchased by God, it is His possession forever; it does not or cannot withdraw to utter destruction again.
