What We’re Saved To

2021-12-10

A pastor friend recently challenged me with leaving out something very important while sharing the Gospel. We are always talking about what Jesus saved us from (eternity in the lake of fire) but not what He saved us to (eternal life now).

We often think of eternal life in an eschatological sense. But eternal life is not something that is only in the future. It is also something we possess now. Note the present tense when the Bible says, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36). If you believe on the Son, you have everlasting life now. Jesus tells us, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10). “Everlasting” and “Eternal” should be seen as describing the quantity and quality of life in Christ.

We do not wait to look for everlasting life only in the future. It is a present reality of every Christian. Anyone who will believe on the Son will immediately receive it.
