Saved from Wrath

Jesus Bare Our Sins
How did Jesus Christ pay for our sins? What does it mean? It is more than just the torture of the Roman executioners He suffered, as truly awful as that was. The Bible tells us that Jesus “bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). The sins we committed were imputed to the sinless Son of God. He did not become sinful, but our sins were judged by God in the death of Jesus Christ.
Jesus Received God the Father’s Wrath
At one time, we deserved nothing but the wrath of God. The wrath of God must be satisfied. He does not let sin go unpunished. Our sin was punished in His Son. The wrath of God fell upon His Son. “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted” (Isaiah 53:4). “The LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). “For the transgression of my people was he stricken” (Isaiah 53:8). “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him” (Isaiah 53:10). “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).
We Were Spared God’s Wrath Because of Jesus
Because Jesus Christ, the precious Son of God, received the wrath of God that we rightfully deserve, we are no longer are under God’s wrath, and never will be. “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” (Romans 5:9). “For God hath not appointed us to wrath” (1 Thessalonians 5:9).
The Great Exchange
A great exchange took place on the cross of Christ. He received the wrath, but we received His righteousness. We are judicially declared righteous when we believe on Christ because He was declared guilty. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21). “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” (Galatians 3:13).
The Infinite Cost of Our Sin
Understand what it took for us to be forgiven of sins and our shame to be washed away. It was an infinite cost. The Son of God did not just get tortured by mere mortals. God the Father poured out His wrath on His Son for every sin ever committed in the past or yet to be committed.
Jesus Is Risen
Being the Son of God, He raised the third day. We received forgiveness of sins, but we also received the newness of resurrection life by faith. “Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him” (Romans 6:8).
