Saul Eyed David from That Day and Forward (1 Samuel 18:7-9)

Saul was glad David was on his team... until the former shepherd received more praise than the king. A simple song changed his life forever: “Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” David was given more praise than Saul, and it changed his life forever.

Saul already knew he lost the kingdom because of two certain rebellious acts. However, this simple song drove the king into a rage that lasted the rest of his life. The envy had him chasing David all over the country to kill him.

This is not healthy. Do not let such envy for success of others ruin what the Lord has entrusted to you. It ruined the rest of Saul’s life, and it will do the same to us, if we let it.

And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. (1 Samuel 18:7-9)
