Thou Shalt Offer Salt (Leviticus 2:13)

2022-03-10

And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt. (Leviticus 2:13)

Salt can do a couple of things, among which are adding savor to or preserving food. Salt was required on the meat offering that was going to be burned to the Lord. Why add it?

We “are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). The Christian brings flavor and preservation to the world. We are also the acceptable “living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1). A major part of our role in the world is giving witness to the Lord. If we do not have that savory salt in the world, “wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”

Without our witness, the world becomes a darker, duller place, ripe for destruction. It will no longer be preserved.
