The Son of Perdition (2 Thessalonians 2:3)

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition (2 Thessalonians 2:3)

Who is the son of perdition? He “opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4). This man is the Antichrist, who will some day come. A falling away, or a great apostasy, will pave the way for his coming. Before the day of Christ comes, both the falling away and his revealing must come, according to this passage.

This man is not the only one called the son of perdition. “While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled” (John 17:12). Judas Iscariot also had this title. Because of this man, the arrest of Christ was expedited and the crowds that once welcomed Christ into Jerusalem rejected Him.

Each time, the son of perdition is tied to apostasy, exposing people’s true allegiance to Christ. Their destruction is sure.
