Peniel (Genesis 32:22-32)

Jacob is not the only one to ever wrestle at Peniel. It is everyone’s journey.

Jacob was alone with the Man with whom he wrestled.

The Man with whom he wrestled was God.

Jacob wrestled with the Man at night, in the dark.

Jacob did not relent with his wrestling.

Jacob was permanently injured in the thigh.

When the day dawned, the heel-grasping deceiver became Israel. He was a prince that had power with God and man and was blessed of the LORD.

Israel’s encounter with God made him hobble on the stop of his staff for the rest of his life. It was a constant reminder of His encounter with God and his reliance on Him. Through his weakness God showed His strength. “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

When the day dawns after a lonely night of wrestling with perseverance, you will have scars, but you will be entirely new and of use to the Most High. We have seen God face to face, yet we live.

And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. (Genesis 32:30)
