Out of the Depths (Psalm 130:1)

A Song of degrees. Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD. (Psalms 130:1)
The psalmist cries from deep despair. What is his despair? “If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?” (Psalms 130:3). He knows that he is condemned before the Lord, but he also recognizes the forgiveness of God is greater: “But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared” (Psalms 130:4). Knowing this, he trusts and waits on the Lord with everything he has: “more than they that watch for the morning.” He knows that God “shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.” In Christ, we can switch that last verse to the past tense. He has redeemed us from all our iniquities.
You must recognize that you’re helplessly in the depths so that you can know God’s deliverance.
