One Speaking unto Him from off the Mercy Seat (Numbers 7:89)

And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him. (Numbers 7:89)

Once the altar was dedicated with all the offerings from the tribes, the voice of the Lord could be heard from the mercy seat. This is how the Lord would commune with His people when the Day of Atonement would eventually be celebrated.

However, what were the first words spoken from the mercy seat? What did He say? “Speak unto Aaron, and say unto him, When thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light over against the candlestick. And Aaron did so; he lighted the lamps thereof over against the candlestick, as the LORD commanded Moses” (Numbers 8:2-3). Previously, we saw how the candlestick was to give light to the shewbread that was over against it, and how this represented the church’s purpose to bring light to the Lord Jesus Christ. The is first thing to be said from the mercy seat. The tabernacle’s whole picture was to point people to the heavenly reality of God and the need for the Savior.
