We Are Not the Main Characters in God’s Story

I know sometimes I subconsciously think I am the main character of God’s story. I read something recently that exposed this line of thinking. How conceited we would have to be to believe that, but I know I have. I have assumed that God is always on my side and against anyone who is against me at the moment. But why would the Lord command this:

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. (Philippians 2:3)

God is the main character of History. Everything is from Him and by Him and for Him. We are all here for His pleasure.
