My Lord Delayeth His Coming (Matthew 24:48)

2024-02-25

But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 24:48-51)

Who is such a man? Well, he calls Jesus his Lord, but recognizes that He is not coming when He expects. He no longer thinks his Lord cares about the affairs of his life, so he lives accordingly. The servant no longer looks for his master’s coming. Since he is no longer looking, the Lord comes unexpectedly. Sure, there were signs, as suggested by the previous section of Scripture. But since he no longer was looking for him, he was caught unawares.

The end of such a servant is devastating. He is “cut asunder.” Perhaps he is flogged, or something more serious, and then he is placed with other hypocrites. There is a combination of utter regret and sadness coupled with ire.

We can’t just pass over this and think this will never be us. I choose to look for His coming today, no matter how long He delays. Keep looking up.
