Molech

Molech (a.k.a. Milcom, Moloch, or Malcham) was the primary god of the Ammonites. The chief practice to serve this god was to sacrifice your children to it. “And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD” (Leviticus 18:21). The punishment was to slay anyone who participated in the practice, and if they were not punished, the Lord would pursue everyone who would even tolerate child sacrifice. “And if the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man, when he giveth of his seed unto Molech, and kill him not: Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people” (Leviticus 20:4-5).

It is interesting that child sacrifice and sexual depravity appear in the same passage two separate times. The one who accepts both child murder and sexual depravity are usually one and the same, even today.

There are people who claim to follow the Lord but also serve this Molech, and the Lord will judge them (Zephaniah 1:4-5).

The Israelites by and large served Molech even though they went through the motions in the Lord’s service. “But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves” (Amos 5:26; cf. Acts 7:43).

The service to this god is alive and well throughout the world today, but now it is called abortion.
