That they might eat the Passover
2024-10-21
Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. (John 18:28)
The religious leaders led Jesus to be tried by Pilate, worrying about being defiled. Their uncleanness on such a high holy day would be a strike against them. Little did they know that the Passover Lamb that takes away the sin of the world was right there with them. Any ritual uncleanness would vanish if they just believed in Him. They would have kept the Passover every day for the rest of their lives. However, their own righteousness was more important than the righteousness of God. Their solution to all sin, shame, and uncleanness was right there! And they threw it away. Therefore, they were far more defiled by this act against Jesus than if they were defiled by Gentile courts.
