Mammon

2023-02-23

If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Luke 16:11-13)

Mammon is defined here by implication: worldly riches. It is compared to “true riches.” We cannot avoid mammon altogether. In fact, we see that how we handle unrighteous mammon will demonstrate if we can handle true riches.

Though we handle mammon in our daily lives, we do not serve it. We do not live life to acquire more of it. Our affections are on the Lord Himself, for He is ours forever, and the mammon of this world passes away.
