Living Water

“Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.” (John 4:10-15)
Jesus offers us eternal life, which lasts forever. He told the woman at the well that if she were to receive the living water He spoke of, she would “shall never thirst” and shall have a “well of water springing up into everlasting life.” (John 4:14).
Later, Jesus tells us, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38), in which the living water source is the Holy Spirit (John 7:39).
There is no condition given to keeping this inner fountain that God gives us. One sip, and we have Him forever. The woman at the well understood this (John 4:15). She was weary of going to the well every day. She lived a very sinful and miserable life. Christ offered her something new that would bring about the true forgiveness and peace she needed, and the power to live the rest of her life for God.
Christ extends the same to us today. He offers forgiveness of sins, and the Holy Spirit to empower us to live purposefully for Him. Jesus died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose from the dead. We have real hope and eternal salvation only in Him.
