Lie Not One to Another (Colossians 3:9-10)

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him (Colossians 3:9-10)

The sinners’ ways are lies. The way of the new man is the way of Christ, “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth” (1 Peter 2:22). Because we are new creatures in Christ, we are to be like Him.

Who told the first lie? It was Satan contradicting God. God said, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:17). But the devil said, “Ye shall not surely die” (Genesis 3:4). It was God’s exact commandment with negation applied.

Jesus confirmed Satan as the originator of lies when He said, “He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44).

To lie is to be like Satan. Yet we all have lied before. But when we lie, there are often consequences. Consider Ananias and Sapphira, who lied about how much they sold their land for in Acts 5:1-10. They lied about something dumb, and they died for it. We should be grateful that we do not all fall down dead when we lie! Yet for us these two are an example.

Be very careful with your words because they can cause harm both to yourself and others.
