Legion (Mark 5:9)

And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. (Mark 5:9)

The story of Legion tells us a lot about demonic activity in the world. When Jesus confronted one of the men of the Gadarenes, He spoke directly to the force behind the man. This demonic force is called “Legion” because there were many demons in the man, probably at least 2,000 (Mark 5:9).

What can we learn?

  1. The one under demonic possession is fascinated with death in that he lived in the tombs. Mark 5:2
  2. He had incredible strength in that he could break chains. Mark 5:3-4.
  3. He was screaming. Mark 5:5.
  4. He was cutting himself or hurting himself. Mark 5:5, 13. Compare with 1 Kings 18:28.
  5. He recognized Jesus and feared Him. Mark 5:6-7, 10.
  6. He was territorial, as he did not want to be exiled from the country. Mark 5:10.
  7. He was naked. Luke 8:27.
  8. He was subject to Jesus. Mark 5:13.

Can you see these activities in our society?

The good news is Christ can deliver people out of this bondage. “And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid” (Mark 5:15). All the forces of darkness must submit to Jesus.
