First Shall Be Last, Last Shall Be First (Matthew 19:30)

The prominent people in this world are not the ones that will be significant in eternity. Few of this world’s rich and famous will be there in heaven. Jesus tells us, “But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first” (Matthew 19:30). He says this about:
- Wealth (Matthew 19:30; 20:16)
- Leadership (Mark 9:35)
- Family and possessions (Mark 10:31)
- Nationality (Luke 13:30)
From passages like these, we can see that (generally speaking) the poor, the servant, and the least esteemed have a greater place in the Kingdom of God. “For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called” (1 Corinthians 1:26). The less you have to offer this world, the more likely you are to seek Someone who is not of this world. The less you have here, the more you set your sights to somewhere else beyond this place.
